Chapter 2.3.1
All for one and one for all!
…
Grace, Max and Lumi reviewed the different footage of the incident as captured by the K-9 units. Eight videos were being projected simultaneously on the wall of the living room of their Sanctuary apartment.
They hadn’t gone down for dinner. In fact, they had missed lunch as well. They just weren’t hungry. They all felt a little dizzy, a little sick to their stomachs, and they had headaches.
“Everything is different now…” Grace said as tears flowed down her cheeks. “We only have each other now – this is what’s left of the world. This is it! Things aren’t going to go back to the way it was…”
Lumi and Max held Grace.
“I was so scared,” Grace cried.
“I was shocked when the big man picked up the police officer and threw him at the guards. And when he picked up Zach, nothing made sense to me anymore. It was surreal in the worst way. And the problem is, it’s not surreal. It’s how things are and, honestly, I don’t know if I want to see it through to the end.
It was like I was standing with you two in the train tracks, frozen and stuck there, and the train was coming. There’s no stopping it. I felt helpless. Useless.
There’s no such thing as Free Will!”
“We’re all scared,” said Max with a shaken voice as she started to cry.
“We’re all scared,” Lumi agreed and wiped a tear from her own eye.
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers’ song, Free Fallin’, started to play.

Grace, Lumi and Max laughed. No one had selected the song.

“When the big man hit John’s father. It was like he shattered the world,” said Max. “The world was breaking into a million pieces. And at that moment… I felt that all the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put it back together again…”
Then John’s father stuck the big man. And cut him up like a Christmas pig. I didn’t expect that! The shattering world came back together like a film in reverse. And he was standing there, holding the big man’s head above his head. And I saw… “
“… a light shining down from heaven. A light upon him.” Lumi finished her sentence with a smile and excitement in her eyes.
“YES!” exclaimed Grace and Max!
“I think the strangers saw it too. I think that’s why they ran away screaming and tearing out their hair,” said Grace.
“Did you see… the great wings of light that opened just before he cut off the big man’s head?” asked Max cautiously.
“YES!”exclaimed Grace and Lumi.
“Did you see… the crown of light floating above his head?” asked Lumi.
Grace and Max looked at Lumi with big eyes and grins.
The room filled with laughter and giggling.
“I hope he’s going to be ok,” said Grace.
“Yeah, me too.” Max added.
“He just needs rest,” said Lumi impatiently.
“You know if it wasn’t for him, we wouldn’t be here right now,” said Grace. “I have that feeling. Not that we would be dead. But it would have been something worse than death.
When I first saw the big man, I had this thing that came vividly to my mind. Of us being shoved into separate car trunks – alive and screaming. When the trunk opened, I saw a man in a white suit grinning down at me. He touched my hair and bent down to smell it. Then he put a hand on my breast…”
Grace started to cry again…
“It didn’t happen,” Lumi said sternly, pursed her lips and scrunched her nose.
“What are we going to do, Lumi?” Grace asked her. “John’s father can’t protect us forever. He can’t be with us wherever we will go. And that man in the white suit – he isn’t going to stop looking for us.”
Grace was surprised at what had come out of her mouth.
Actually, she intended to say something else. And the way Lumi and Max were looking at her, she knew they had the same idea about the man in the white suit.
Max also had a glimpse of the man in the white suit when she saw the big man. But her man in a white suit was holding the hands of her daughter, Violeta. But she didn’t want to mention it.
Lumi was also keeping something from them. In her vision, the man in a white suit opened the trunk and told her, Happy Birthday, my little mouse. Then he raised a chain and pulled John’s father’s head into view. The face of John’s father was broken and beaten. His lips were swollen and cracked like scorched earth.
I’m giving you a wise and lucky monkey, my fair haired beauty. A wise and lucky monkey to entertain my princess for all her rainy days…
The words echoed in her memory and Lumi shivered.
“Hellooo… Where are you!” said Grace and she kissed Lumi on the forehead.
Max and Grace saw a flicker of terror and hopelessness move like a shadow inside Lumi’s eyes.
Lumi exhaled loudly and regained her composure.
Lumi said firmly. “I am the Master of my fate. I am the captain of my soul.
And, ladies, we are going to be soldiers. We are going to become lean, mean, fighting machines.
Because no man shall make us his slave. And any man that dare try, will look up and find his headless body slumping to the ground.”
And she drove the tanto into the coffee table with a thud. It was the same tanto that John’s father had dropped before he lifted up the big man’s head.
They stacked their hands on top of the pommel of the tanto and made their oath. A wind blew the curtains open around the balcony door. A crow was perched nearby. It cawed three times.
Toţi pentru unul şi unul pentru toţi!
They sealed the oath with a kiss on the lips.
“Yuck!” Lumi spat when Grace jestfully pushed her tongue between Lumi’s lips.
They all rolled on the floor laughing.
…
After everyone had gone to sleep, Lumi continued to review the footage of the fight. At some point, she heard snoring. She opened the door to the hall and found Hachi snoring there. Hachi yawned and got up. He made begging noises and she opened the door wider for him to come in. Hachi made begging sounds again and barked.
“Ok. Ok,” Lumi said as she pulled her boots on and followed him down the stairs and out into the night.
It was a beautiful night and the stars shone brightly. The night air was cool and filled with the sweet fragrance of lilies, linden, and, perhaps, magnolia.

Hachi led her down through the gardens at a slow and careful pace. Then across the gentle green hills toward the church.
In the distance, Lumi could see that the Catholic church was lit with hundreds of candles that made a ring around it like a wreath of stars.
Hachi barked.
Lumi heard strange words being spoken:
Pater noster qui in caelis es sanctificetur nomen tuum veniat regnum tuum fiat voluntas tua sicut in caelo et in terra panem nostrum supersubstantialem da nobis hodie et dimitte nobis debita nostra sicut et nos dimisimus debitoribus nostris et ne inducas nos in temptationem sed libera nos a malo.
Then a man said, good evening, and tipped his cowboy hat. He smelled of roses – or rose brandy. He had been laying in the grass – enjoying the beautiful night sky.
Lumi wasn’t afraid.
“God bless you, my child. Where are you going to at this strange hour?” he asked as he sat up.
“Mister Hachi wants to visit the church.” replied Lumi half-joking.
“Mister Hachi wants to visit the church,” the man repeated in amusement. “No doubt, he wants to speak with the King.”
Hachi barked.
“Yes, I understand, Mister Hachi,” said the man. “This is important business. It is written in the stars, you say?”
The man got up slowly, bent over again, and fished for a flashlight in the grass.
“It’s my honor to escort you and Mister Hachi to the church. You’d shame us both if you refuse a old man to do you a humble service.”
Lumi giggled.
He found the flashlight and turned it on. It didn’t turn on. He shook it and tried again. Nothing.
“Things don’t always work out like they should,” the man observed.
Then he whacked it good and the light came on and illuminated his face. It was a kindly, handsome face and he had a warm, friendly smile. His silver and white, curly locks fell down to his shoulders.
“Sometimes, you have to give things a good kick in the pants to turn on the light,” he chuckled.
Lumi laughed.
His shirt lay in the grass. His chest was well defined and his biceps were powerful.
“Imagine that!” he said with wonder. “There is always a light in the darkest night. And you are never alone – even when the night is longest. Even in the most unexpected of places…”
Lumi marveled at the physique of this old man. He reminded her of sculptures of Zeus. Or Moses.
You’re never alone, Lumi.”
Hachi wiped his nose with a paw.
“Don’t you get impatient with me, Mister Hachi!” said the old man.
“The problem with you is that despite all your fluffiness and charm, you have a basic lack of decency and respect! A good dog knows his place and manners.
It’s no wonder they serve your kind up in Chinese restaurants!”
Hachi squeaked in humble protest.
“Ok, let’s go…” the old man said as he slipped on his shirt – a white oxford without a stain of grass or earth.
The old man led them across the hills and down by the mine entrance. The light revealed a path for easy steps.
When they came to the church, the old man headed up the steps to the church’s entrance. Hachi and Lumi followed. As the old man went up the steps, he left her with parting words:
“Luminita. It means, light. What a glorious and blessed fate, that. To be a light. How wonderful, blessed, and lucky you are!
Be a light unto the world. Shine bright. Shine bright and defy that dark star that has set himself against you. Against your friends. And against the whole world.”
He paused and then finished his advice:
“He clothes himself in white to make a mockery of the light, the truth, and the way. He clothes himself in a simple, naive humanity to make parody of the magnificence of humanity. But his weapons, his weapons are sophisticated, cruel and clever. And his intelligence moves faster than the speed of light.
But so too his many vanities.”
Hachi sneezed.
Lumi didn’t know what to say. But she heard every word he said. He had spoken to her heart.
The old man went into the church.
A strange thought came to her.
If there was a God and God assumed human form, Lumi supposed that this old man could be how God might appear to some of us. Unexpectedly coming and going, but leaving us with His Word written upon our hearts.
Hachi sneezed again.
“God bless you, Hachi,” she said as they went around the side of the church and approached the cave.
Eree saw her first. He came and kissed her rosy cheeks. “It’s late,” he whispered with a smile.
“How is he?” Lumi asked with fear.
“King?! Oh – King is strong as a bull! Eree whispered in her ear.
Daniel came to Lumi, kissed her cheeks, and put a hot mug of tea into her hands. “Drink this…” he insisted.
Lumi looked at the still body of John’s father and unbid tears streamed down her face.
Zach came with an armload of wood for the fire. After he put it down, he came over to her and kissed her cheeks. Then he wiped her tears away with a handkerchief.
“He’s resting. You’ll see! He’ll be up and about, tomorrow.
He’s strong as a bull! More terrible than an eagle. Ferocious as a lion. And he has a heart that overflows with love.”
Lumi, Daniel, and Eree laughed at Zach’s incredible boasts.
“Tomorrow, he’ll be up and about, shouting out orders, bewitching beautiful young ladies, and anointing trees in hopes that they will gladly join the army of God.”
Eree, Daniel and Zach laughed again.
Lumi blushed but she had no idea what Zach had meant about the trees. It was a nice picture though. She sipped the tea and handed the cup back to Daniel. Then she went over to John’s father and looked upon his face. A tear fell from her eye and fell upon the corner of his mouth.
Nothing happened. Lumi sighed.
The image of the light falling on him from above and great wings spreading from his back came to her mind. He swung the tanto wide and fast in an arc that separated the big man’s head with a single cut. The big man’s head fell to the ground and rolled in front of his feet – staring up at John’s father in horror and disbelief.
Hachi made begging sounds.
Lumi lifted Hachi up in both arms so he could see John’s father. Then she put Hachi down. Hachi laid down and went to sleep.
“Join us in prayer, Lumi,” Eree invited.
“I don’t know how to pray,” admitted Lumi.
“Repeat after me,” said Daniel.
Our Father who is in heaven,
“Our Father who is in heaven,” Lumi repeated.
Hallowed be Your name.
“Hallowed be Your name,” Lumi repeated.
Your kingdom come. Your will be done,
“Your Kingdom come. Your will be done,” Lumi repeated.
On earth as it is in heaven.
“On earth as it is in heaven,” Lumi repeated.
“Give us this day our daily bread,” John’s father whispered as he put a hand on Lumi and Zach’s shoulder. Lumi and Zach turned their heads in surprise and he winked at them. Eree and Daniel moved around him and held him up as he continued.
“Give us this day our daily bread,” John’s father said.
“Give us this day our daily bread,” Lumi repeated.
And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
“And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors,” Lumi repeated.
And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
“And do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil,” Lumi repeated.
For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever!
“For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever!” said Lumi.
“Amen,” they all said together. Hachi barked. His tail wagged ferociously.
“I’m so happy to see you…” Lumi blurted and threw her arms around his neck.
“Never again underestimate the power of prayer…” he whispered in Lumi’s ear. Zach put a pot on the fire to make tea. Daniel dropped the bucket into the well and hoisted up a bucket of water.
“Brothers and sister. I’m hungry!” he said loudly and gladly as Eree and Lumi helped him to sit in a chair.
Lumi knelt in front of him and lay her head on his lap.
Hachi also laid down by his feet and started snoring hard.
“I had the strangest dream,” he said as he softly stroked Lumi’s head. “It’s a ridiculous dream! Zach will laugh the loudest when I tell you all about it.
I dreamed that I cut off the head of a giant. Imagine that!”
Lumi looked up at him and he winked at her.
Daniel, Eree and Zach didn’t know if they should laugh or be concerned about memory loss.
“That’s some dream, sefu!” finally said Zach with a grin. “You say you cut off the head of a giant!?”
“But the dream was interrupted. God spoke and He said, Wake up and Pray, you lazy sack of bones!” John’s father continued.
“Okay – He didn’t call me a lazy sack of bones…”
John’s father paused and grinned. Daniel handed him a cup of cold holy water. He drank it deeply and exhaled in great relief.
“But I wake to find you girls stealing my thunder with my baby doll here!”
John’s father laughed loudly; his laughter echoed in the cave and surrounded them with a ringing joy. Lumi pinched his thigh. And he laughed even louder.
Dr. Nakamura had woken from all the commotion. She came out of the caretaker’s apartment and gave them a stern look.
She immediatelty administered a sedative by injection to John’s father’s arm before he could protest.
“It’s too soon for him to get excited again,” Dr. Nakamura said and she went back to bed.
“Doctors are a pain in the…” John’s father said as his head tipped forward and he fell asleep.
The men moved him to the ground where they had laid fleecy, soft sheepskins for themselves. Then, they covered him with wool blankets.
“STRONG. AS. A. BULL!” Daniel, Eree, and Zach exclaimed at the same time as they laughed at Lumi with big eyes.
Lumi blushed.
Eree, Daniel and Zach asked her to join them in the rosary. She gently refused with a grin and mentioned something about them trying to steal the King’s thunder again. They smiled and began their prayers.
She put on her K-9s and reviewed the social messages published before the power failure.

Every human person possesses Free Will – so long as it is in their rational capacity and necessity to judge between good and evil and choose upon this or that good, action or actions…
The unfortunate or unsatisfied outcome that is a consequence of Free Will does not diminish or cancel Free Will. Nor can you imprison a person, torture them, and deprive them of all material good or comfort, and, thereby, completely deprive that person of Free Will…

If you believe in a higher power I imagine it to be the same. We are given an allowance to play with but we can only use it for the purpose it is given.
Lumi took off her K-9s. She didn’t realize how long she’d been looking at those messages. But it must have been an hour. Daniel, Eree and Zach had finished praying the rosary.
Daniel handed her a cup of steaming tea of camomile, rose petals and mint.
Lumi coughed to get their attention.
“What is going on – is it an unavoidable fate? Or is this disaster the consequence of our own un-doing?” she asked the three men.
“We don’t know what’s going on,” Zach replied as he sipped his steaming tea.
“I meant to say that we don’t know what’s going to happen. So I think it’s too soon to say this is the end times – if I understood correctly that your question is about whether or not we are living in the end times.”
“The signs are loud and clear,” Eree interrupted.
“You put down some demons yesterday. You weren’t confused about how to dispose of them.
The facts are loud and clear. Lots of people are dieing. The ocean of humanity is running red with blood. Leaders are falling like stars from the heavens.”
“Or we are psychopaths,” interjected a grinning Daniel. “Who is to say that we aren’t?
But I think that what Lumi really wants to know is this: if the end game is predetermined, is there any point in us taking ownership of that end game?
Lumi nodded affirmatively.
“God is the God of history,” Eree said. “Through his prophets, God has shown, again and again, that God alone understands the meaning of history. That God alone knows the future and the past. That God alone MAKES history. What God wills, comes to pass without a single exception. What God promises, comes to pass!”
“Whoa, there…” Daniel interrupted Eree.
“Lumi hasn’t read the Bible. She doesn’t know for herself if any of these bold declarations – which you make – are true.
Lumi grinned.
“You see, Lumi. We have studied the Bible.” Zach explained. “ We have carefully read in the Bible – a history where God has demonstrated Himself to be the God of history.
“So, we understand that God intends to put an end to the rule and mischief of Lucifer on Earth,” Daniel added.
“That God intends to make right what is wrong with the world. That Christ will come again and make it so. We believe this will happen according to the words of Christ, the angels, the prophets, and the saints.
Except Eree – he doesn’t really believe in angels and saints.”
Eree smiled and shrugged.
“In a manner of speaking, the story of history has been written – more or less. The plot is as inevitable as it is Glorious,” Daniel explained to Lumi.
“But our stories, your story and mine, are written by our own hand, by our hearts, by the things we do and that which we fail to do. You or I may (or may not) figure into the center of the drama of history – but we are caught up in that drama. The drama of history is inescapable.”
“And what I’m saying, Lumi,” said Zach, “is that we don’t really know where we are in the plot. John’s father, for example, has described the course of history as a pattern of concentric circles approaching a dramatic focus. So things could look and feel like the big dramatic moment, like what is described in the revelations, but in fact, it is only a taste of the pie and not the whole pie.”
“You’re hurting my head – again,” said Eree with resignation.
“Mmmm. Pie!” exclaimed Daniel.
Lumi laughed so hard, her laughter echoed in the cave and rang around them in concentric waves. To which she covered her mouth and looked very surprised.
“Ok, so you’re saying I don’t make HISTORY, but my free will empowers me to make my history insofar as that does not contradict the HISTORY which God reveals to humanity in prophecy,” Lumi summarized.
“Almost,” said Daniel and winked at her.
“Let us pray for understanding and friendship,” Eree suggested.
Daniel and Zach agreed, they joined hands and they bowed their heads in prayer.
When they said, amen, and let go of each other’s hands, Lumi wanted to know why they had stopped to pray in the middle of the conversation.
“Sometimes, too many words and thoughts become vanities,” Daniel explained. “It’s important to speak our hearts and share our thoughts, but it’s just as important to renew our friendship and our common desire for understanding and wisdom. In prayer.
“It’s not about winning the argument. It’s about coming to truth and insight, together. It’s about coming to an understanding that we can live with. Live in. Live through – together. ”
“Nice,” Lumi said. And her own affirmation surprised her. Because she had never before appreciated an unfinished argument or conversation.
She had never before considered that a clear and useful answer is something that might come on its own time table – unraveling through experience, reflection, friendship, or – God forbid – prayer.
Lumi was quiet. She had never been quiet like this before. She was quiet in her heart and mind.
“Uh-oh!” Daniel said.
“What?” asked Zach and Eree.
“Now, we’ve done it. We’ve gone and stolen King’s thunder this time! Look at her face. She’s in peace.”
“Ten Our Fathers, boys!” said Zach. “As penance for our betrayal of the King!”
Lumi blushed and her warm, rosy cheeks shone brightly on her cold, pale face.
Daniel pulled a bottle out of his coat pocket. It was rose brandy. He poured 200 ml. into each cup. They toasted to the King and drank down the rose brandy with one gulp. Lumi too.
Birds chirped and warbled from the nearby trees. Roosters crowed proudly. Dawn was forthcoming.
The three men made preparations to take John’s father to the Sanctuary medical center. Lumi returned to her review of social messages.

Lumi took off her K-9s. She had the distinct impression that someone (or something) was speaking directly to her through the social messages that she was reading just now. Maybe, God?
That was crazy, Lumi thought to herself! Or she was going crazy!
She walked around to the front of the church to clear her mind. Just then Grace turned the corner with tears running down her cheeks.
“There you are!” Grace gasped. “I’ve been… looking for you everywhere!”
“What’s wrong?” asked Lumi with concern.
“Don’t you ever leave me like that again!” Grace’s tears were thrown about wildly as she shouted. “I don’t know anyone here. I don’t even know why I’m here. What am I supposed to do?
These people don’t owe me anything! I never lived as well, ate as well, and slept as well as I have these past few days. I can’t pay for any of it. As far as I’m concerned, Bucharest is burning to the ground and I should be dieing with all the rest of them!”
Lumi hugged Grace tightly and whispered in her ear: “It’s going to be ok. You’re here for a reason. You belong here, Grace. We all belong here.
“That’s fate!” Lumi said and laughed.
“And the first thing these people expect of us… is to listen with our hearts and minds.
But you’re right that we have to stop thinking of ourselves as dinner guests. We have to be the friends and family that they have been for us; we have to carry our own weight around here. We have to contribute and make a difference. That’s why we are really here.”
“Yes. That’s exactly how I feel, Lumi. I can’t stay, otherwise. I can’t stay if I’m useless to these people. I can’t be a burden upon them,” Grace said in tears.
“Me too!” cried Max as she joined the hug.
“Yesterday, we stood by helpless,” said Lumi firmly.
“John’s father stood between us and our nightmares. But we need to fight our own fights. And we have a great debt to that man. Because I know that we all glimpsed our fate in the hands of the man in a white suit – a fate that John’s father adjusted by his intervention.”
Grace and Max nodded in complete agreement.
“Toţi pentru unul şi unul pentru toţi!” The three whispered to each other.
…
”Hey, Charlies angels… are you going to cry and hug all day or are we going to get on to lesson two?” yelled Zach as he and Eree helped John’s father into the rear cab of the F350. Daniel was in the driver’s seat and Dr. Nakamura next to him.
The Killers song, Human, started to play outloud from Lumi’s pocket. They laughed, kissed each other on the cheek with joy, and jumped into the truck bed.
